Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is an international grape variety with a singular grey (and not white) grape of French origin, which finds its natural vocation in the Triveneto area in Italy between the regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige, that origin the Pinot Grigio delle Venezie. According to some thorough studies, Pinot Grigio is a French grape variety born from a mutation of Pinot Noir; however, the best French territory for this variety to grow is not Burgundy but Alsace, where it is known as Pinot Gris.

The Pinot Grigio grape variety is known for producing wines that have predominantly floral and fruity aromas, sometimes enriched by some herbaceous hints and a very soft and mineral taste. In Italy it has been one of the fastest growing wines of the Italian winemaking sector for several years, attested by the great commercial success of Pinot Grigio delle Venezie; a quantitative increase in production which, however, has not affected but has gone hand in hand with the qualitative development.

Perhaps the best Italian territory for this grape variety is in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the winegrowing region of Collio, where an Orange Wine is produced through both a traditional white winemaking process and a prolonged maceration of the skins. That is how the so-called Pinot Grigio Ramato is obtained, that is through a winemaking process that gives excellent results, giving life to more structured, pleasant, fruity and fragrant wines. In Alsace, the aromatic Gewürztraminer grape variety is produced alongside its other late harvested expressions (or “vendanges tardives”) or in the raisin wine version, from grapes attacked by botrytis cinerea, also known as noble rot.

Pinot Grigio is an extremely versatile wine due to its characteristics: it can accompany charcuterie, fish dishes or white meat and it is great as aperitif. From Damijan Podversic to Albino Armani, from Draga to Stachlburg, from Klanjscek to Komjanc, from Pravis to Longariva just to name a few, scroll down and discover all the expressions of this grape variety for sale on the Wine Online shop.
